The co-founders behind the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has claimed that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction for an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.

Ben Cohen, who established the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, announced how he plans to personally create the controversial flavor as part of a personal collection highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking out about.

Longstanding Dispute Involving Founders versus Parent Company

This latest development intensifies the continuing tension among the world-famous ice cream maker with its corporate parent, the British consumer goods giant which acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.

Both founders have claimed how the parent company and its ice cream arm the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".

The Fruit Flavor as an Emblem of Solidarity

Mr. Cohen revealed through social media how he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting consumer ideas regarding the product's name and potential ingredients.

“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen stated from a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored ice cream that advocates for lasting ceasefire in Palestine and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”

The watermelon has emerged as a symbol for solidarity with the Palestinian people due to its colors, that mirror the colors in the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Historical Activism and Recent Developments

In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell its products in areas occupied by Israel, resulting in the parent company transferring their Israel business to a local licensee, thereby permitting continued sales in disputed territories.

This upcoming dessert series will be created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious ice cream brand that was first established in 2016 to support former US presidential candidate Senator Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Back".

Leadership Shifts and Future Plans

The founder revealed that he will develop additional ice cream flavors that address concerns that the company was prevented from addressing publicly due to Unilever.

The announcement comes after partner Jerry Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's recently, following decades with the organization, mentioning concerns that its independence was undermined following Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.

Previously, Mr. Cohen remarked that "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with our parent company was deeply distressing him."

"My heart leads me to continue to work within the organization to fight for its independence ensuring that it can actualise its ethical purpose, the principles which it was founded on while upholding for over 40 years," he told journalists.
